John Stephen (June 12, 1806 - June 20, 1897) was born on June 12, 1806, in Ballaugh, Isle of Man, as the son of William and Ann Stephen, and was later christened on March 21, 1866. Throughout his working life, he established himself professionally as a joiner and also served as a coroner on the island. Over the course of his life, he entered into two marriages. He first married the widowed Sarah Chambers on November 4, 1848, in Ballaugh; Sarah passed away on November 24, 1858, at the age of 61, and was memorialized at Ballamoar. Following her death, John married the widowed Jane Ashcroft, daughter of John Teare, on May 19, 1866, in Onchan.

A prominent resident of Ballamoar in Ballaugh, John Stephen maintained close local ties, notably serving as the probate executor and close associate of the Reverend Richard Battersby, the former domestic chaplain to Lord Skelmersdale who spent his final years on the Isle of Man. Following Battersby's death in October 1866, his probate was granted to John Stephen. John Stephen lived to the advanced age of 91, passing away on June 20, 1897, in Ballaugh. He was buried on June 23, 1897, at St Mary's Churchyard in Ballaugh, where he rests near the Reverend Battersby.
